Peer Support Specialist
A peer support specialist brings lived experience of mental health recovery into the work — not as a credential on a wall, but as the reason someone across the table believes change is possible. This role supports the adults we walk alongside in Psychosocial Rehabilitation and in our career services work.
What the role looks like
- Meet adults where they are — in the community, at home, or alongside our outpatient program — as part of PSR and career services.
- Help people set their own goals around work and daily life, then take the next practical step with them.
- Share what has worked, honestly, and keep the focus on the goals they have set rather than the ones we would choose.
- Work alongside therapists, case managers and other supports rather than in isolation.
What we're looking for
- Lived experience of mental health challenges and recovery, used appropriately and with clear boundaries.
- Training or certification as a peer support specialist in North Carolina, or a willingness to complete it.
- Comfort working across Gates, Hertford, Bertie and Pitt Counties.
- Patience, steadiness, and respect for the rights of every person we serve.

Enrolling in career services
Career services is for adults living with mental illness who want to work — a first job, a return, or a change of direction. Enrollment starts with a conversation.

Someone on the team talks it through with you and points you toward career services, PSR or outpatient support — whichever fits the goal you've described.

You set the goals
The work follows the goals you have set for yourself, with a peer support specialist alongside you as you move toward them.
